Thought of the Week

Live in such a way that those who know you but don't know God will come to know God because they know you.

Home Page photoMessage From the Head Teacher:

St Bernard’s was founded in 1952 to give the children of Furness a Catholic and Christian education.  That remains its ethos, but shaped for a modern society where pupils are challenged to explore the moral and ethical issues of our time.

Each subject is an exploration of knowledge and a development of skill.  The pupils are also developing a wonder about the complexity and beauty of a world created by God of which they are an essential part.

St Bernard’s prepares its pupils to shape their future communities by taking responsibility in the world of work, influencing the ethical decisions that society makes and supporting the hurt and vulnerable in our communities.

Pupils are supported in their learning and development by an Academic and Form Tutor, who monitors, discusses and challenges a pupil’s progress through the school.

Pupils make very good progress in St Bernard’s school because the individual pupil is important and the environment is rich in opportunities, whether in the classroom, on the sports field or on stage, for them to develop the talents they have.

Mission Statement

Following in the long established tradition of Catholic Education in this country, St Bernard’s School exists to provide for the children of the Furness area a vital, sympathetic and fully Christian environment in which they can grow intellectually, spiritually and physically so as to enter the adult world strong in their belief in Christ and fully prepared for the opportunities, the responsibilities and the experiences that await them.

To achieve this, the School will do everything to help them develop as rounded individuals, to reject negative values and to live their lives demonstrating the Gospel values of respect and love both of God and of their neighbours.

School Aims

• To create a school community in which each child grows in the understanding of Christ’s teaching and of the modern world’s need for His message.
• To ensure that pupils achieve their full academic potential, and are eager to participate in further education and in the world of work.
• To create in pupils a joy in learning about the world in which they live.
• To foster the physical well-being and development of all pupils.
• To value the creative expression of our culture through art, music, literature and theatre.
• To instill in pupils a sensitivity to the equality of all, together with a recognition of individual differences and needs.
• To create an environment in which self-respect and respect for others is the foundation for all relationships at school and in the wider community.
